The Kolanupaka Jain temple is 2000 years old, but the temple flourished during the Rashtrakuta period. Legend has it that the temple was built by Bharat Chakravarti. Before the 4th century, Jainism was prevalent in Andhra Pradesh. Around 20 inscriptions have been discovered at Kulpakji. The inscriptions mention the history of the temple, such as an inscription of 1125 AD Manastambha, and the 12th century inscription mentions Meghachandra Siddhanta Deva, who entered Sallekhana, after which Jain activity declined after 1276 AD and was reestablished in 1711 AD. Kolanupaka temple was and is one of the prominent centers of Jainism, making it an important pilgrimage for the Svetambara Jains of South India.
