Chapchar Kut Festival is celebrated in the first week of March after the forest slopes have been cleared for jhum cultivation. Jhum is an eco-friendly rotational system of crop farming in which a fertile piece of forest land is cut and cleared for agriculture, and then for the next year, a separate land is cleared and used.
The once-harvested land is given years of rest as the tribe keeps moving to a new place so that the soil recovers in fertility and micronutrients. Once Jhum is done, it is marked by a village feast. Origins of Chapchar Kut Festival
According to fables, folk tales, and oral history passed down generations among the Mizo people, the festival started anytime between 1400 and 1700 AD. No fixed date can be attributed. Stories say that in the village Suaipui, where the Mizo ancestors lived, a tribal chief once took his men out on a regular hunting expedition. Still, they could not hunt any significant game after days of waiting. When they returned home empty-handed, to the disappointment of the villagers, the chief decided that everyone would pool their resources and prepare a feast from whatever was available.
A celebration with plenty of meat for everyone and rice beer flowing abundantly was set up, and the mood instantly became cheerful. Merrymaking, singing, and dancing followed. This tradition of feasting together with the village has continued ever since then. Many other villages followed suit, and this tradition became a staple of Mizoram. The folk dance Chai was also born from this festival.

By Air: Lengpui Airport (AJL) is the closest airport, lying 35 km outside of Aizawl city centre. You can find direct flights from Delhi and Kolkata, and connecting flights from most other cities.
