Agumbe Sunset View Point, located on a mountain pass that connects the plains of Karnataka with the coastal region, is covered with verdant forests, sparkling streams and little cascades, making the region in the Western Ghats virtually a Garden of Eden. Agumbe is a tiny village in the Shimoga district of the Malnad region in Karnataka. Also known as “The Cherrapunji of the South,” Agumbe is a pioneer in rainforest conservation programs, trekking, and tourism. It is well known as “Hasiru Honnu,” meaning green gold. This is because Agumbe has a variety of medicinal plants, including rare species like Myristica, Eugenia, Ficus, and more.

Onake Abbi is one of the many waterfalls that Nature has bestowed on this place. The waterfall derives its name from the word ‘Onake’, which refers to a long pole that is used to grind species in the local Kannada language. There is only a single branch in the falls and it is like ‘Onake’, hence the name. The fall is cascading down from a height of around 500 feet and is one of the tallest waterfalls that can be seen on the Western Ghats belt. The summit of the trek offers a breathtaking view of the entire waterfall and the surrounding dense jungle.

2. Gopala Krishna Temple

Gopala Krishna Temple is a 14th-century temple of the Hoysala Period dedicated to Lord Krishna. Known for its beautiful sculptures, this unique temple was built under the guidance of renowned architect Muniyangala Krishna Prasad which represents the Hoysala art and architecture. The inner sanctum is covered with an additional external hall which is quite typical in Tulunadu style. There are 108 steps leading from the basement to the Garbha Gruha that symbolize 108 names of Lord Krishna chanted through Sri Krishna Ashtotthara.

3. Koodlu Theertha Falls

Located on Udupi-Agumbe Road, Kudlu Theertha is the first waterfall on the River Sita. It is a spectacular waterfall that drops from a height of about 300 feet into a pond. Legend has it that thousands of years ago sages used to meditate near the place where the pond exists today. As such, the local people consider the water of the pond to be very holy.
The pond where the water drops from the mountain is not very deep. Visitors can walk to a point where they can stand beneath the falling water and enjoy a refreshing bath. However, visitors need to exercise caution while putting their heads under a thick stream of water as the water drops down with immense force. Apart from waterfalls, the place is also known for its serene atmosphere. There is one more waterfall above Kudlu Theertha called Manga Theertha but there is no direct access to this fall.
