The earlier name of this site was ‘Annadale’, and there’s an interesting story behind it. Captain Charles Pratt Kennedy, one of the first people to come here, was so awestruck by its beauty that he decided to name the place after a young girl, Anna, who he was fond of during his youth. That’s how the name Anna-dale came into being. The original name was found in Shimla’s written texts in 1840. Since the 1830s, the year it is believed to have been discovered, Annandale has been an Anglo-Indian entertainment hub. They came here for their amusement, to celebrate birthdays, host parties, dog shows, races, clubs, etc. It is also a favourable spot for cricket and polo.

Annandale Location And Timings

Annandale is about 2 km from the Shimla Railway Station and 3 km from the main Bus Station. It is at an altitude of 6,117 feet in the village of Kaithu and is one of the main tourist places in West Shimla. It is quite popular among the locals as well as tourists, so it is easy to rent a car or take a cab to reach here.

They can visit the place any time during the year, but the facilities inside have separate times.

  • Museum timings are from 10 am to 2 pm and then again at 3 pm to 5 pm
  • The premises are closed on Mondays

By Air: The nearest airport to Annandale is the Shimla Airport, from which you can take a private car or a cab to reach Annandale in approximately an hour.

By Train: Annandale is merely 2 km from Shimla Railway Station, from which you can also take a 15-minute walk.

2.Shimla Kalka Toy Train

This Toy Train goes from Kalka to Shimla through a scenic mountainous terrain, giving the passengers some brilliant views of the lush green woods and the local villages. The route has more than a hundred tunnels and 800+ bridges built along the railway line between Kalka and Shimla. Toy Train railway was built by English architect Herbert Septimus Harington (1898 – 1903) during British rule and its main engineer was H. S. Harington. The railway is about 96.6 kilometres long which promises a super fun ride to Shimla.

3. Tara Devi Temple

Built-in 1766 A.D. by King Bhupendra Sen of the Sen Dynasty, this temple is a beloved religious place in Shimla. Over 15000 devotees flock here every weekend. On Sunday and Tuesday, the temple organizes where prasad is served to all who visit for free. The beautiful Christ Church in Kasauli was built by a British family who also founded the town of Kasauli in 1842 as a cantonment town. The church is a marvellous structure built in the shape of a cross. You can find a few chestnut and fir trees surrounding the monument that offer the area a calm and pleasant air. This church was earlier an Anglican church that was founded in the year 1844. It is also near the bus stand and quite accessible since it is the image that comes to mind when people think of Shimla.
