The Gadisar Lake was built as a reservoir around the 12th or 13th century by King Raja Rawal Jaisal, who ruled over one of Rajasthan’s most respected royal families. He was the first king of Jaisalmer city and state. The lake was likely constructed to help combat Rajasthan’s aridity.
The land around the lake naturally sloped in such a way that it collected and held any available rainwater, which was scarce. Over time, the lake became a vital water source for the city, serving as a reservoir and water conservation system. It greatly reduced the effects of water scarcity in the area. Some people believe the lake was a natural oasis in the middle of the Thar Desert, but it is a manmade creation. You can visit Gadisar Lake from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day. There’s no entry fee to get in, but if you want to go boating, you’ll have to pay for it. Boating costs differ with the type of boat and equipment used, costs differ depending on which type of boat it is. A row boat is available at INR 10 per person, a paddle boat at INR 50 per person and a joy ride in Shikara at INR 100 per person.
