Exploring Jageshwar
Jageshwar is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage town near Almora in Almora district of the Himalayan Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is one of the Shaivism tradition’s Dhams ( a pilgrimage region). Over the years, the temple site has been positioned as and grew as sacred geography in the form of northern (Uttara) Kashi (Varanasi). The site is protected and managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It includes a conglomeration of revered temples including Dandeshwar Temple, Chandi-ka-Temple, Jageshwar Temple, Kuber Temple, Mritunjaya Temple, Nanda Devi or Nau Durga, Nava-grah temple, a Pyramidal shrine, and Surya Temple. According to the ASI, the origin of these temples can be dated to about 2,500 back and belong to the post-Gupta and pre-medieval eras. They were mostly constructed and renovated by the Katyuri dynasty kings. In recent memory, a red sandstone pillar has also been discovered here with engraved figures of humans and spiritual figures. The pillar is said to be built all the way back in the 1st century BC. The town attracts a massive crowd when it celebrates the Jageshwar Monsoon Festival during the Hindu calendar month of Shravan (overlaps with July–August) and the annual Maha Shivratri Mela (Shivratri festival), which takes place in early spring.

Did Adi Shankaracharya build the temples at Jageshwar?
There is a prevailing theory floating around that Adi Shankara built some of these temples here in Jageshwar Dham, but once again there is no textual or epigraphical evidence to support this claim. Instead, some of the architectural features or designs and style of some of these Hindu temples date back to the early 7th century, which is about 70 to 100 years before Adi Shankara lived (c. 788-820 CE).
What are some of the significant monuments in the Jageshwar valley?
Temple 47, found at the Jageshwar site, is a Valabhi Nagara style superstructure with a wagon vault from the 7th or 8th century. Its western wall was capped with a Vinadhara Shiva stele, the northern wall with Ganesha stele , and the eastern wall with yoga-performing Saptamatrikas. Temple 2, found at the Jageshwar site, is another early temple with a tiered tower in the curvilinear latina Nagara style. Its structure features a square sanctum that is preceded by a short vestibule (or antarala). The platform and base moulding closely resembles Temple 47. The tower is capped with a cogged disc (or amalaka) and above it, lies a hypethral linga.
Is Jageshwar Valley named after Jageshwar Temple?
Among the 125 temples that together make up the Jageshar Valley, Temple 37 is eponymously named as the Jageshwar temple. It is adorned with a large mandapa, a vestibule, and a sanctum. However, it was initially erected in maybe the 12th or the 13th century, but the site evidence prominently suggests that this particular temple structure has been rebuilt a few times over the course of history. The temple structure is put up together by four connected entrances, including detailed intricate carvings on its tower while the superstructure is pyramidal. Surprisingly, the sanctum of this temple has two unusual dvarapalas that were added in the 14th-century or later.
How did Nainital get its present name?
