Jitha MJ talks about her trip to Sri Lanka that she took with her mother. She elaborates on her experience in the island country and describes the culture, lifestyle, and nature there. She booked her package from TravelTriangle and it included her hotels, transfers, and sightseeing all for a cost of 640 Dollars (INR 15,551 per person).

This trip to Sri Lanka was a birthday gift for our mother. My brother had gifted her the holiday and I was going to accompany her to the destination. The reason we chose Sri Lanka was because our mother had always wanted to go there. The island country reminded her of the serenity and calm that she had witnessed in Kerala and I was very excited to be a part of her journey.

Our package to Sri Lanka was booked via TravelTriangle because my brother found it to be an easy affair. He chose the best quote from ‘Paradise Voyages’ and got us sorted when it came to the land package for Sri Lanka.

Day 1 – Sightseeing in Kandy

Dance performance in Kandy Sri Lanka

We landed in Colombo and were transferred to Kandy from the airport. This was a long road journey and we reached our hotel by 5 PM. After checking in and freshening up, we went out to see the Kandy folk dance. It was an entertaining show and we loved how the performance included the dancers walking over fire stones. Next was the ‘Temple of Tooth’ which was again an amazing experience. Incidentally, it was a full moon night and we were lucky to visit the Buddhist temple on this auspicious occasion.

Day 2: Bentota – An eventful road journey

Sightseeing and food in Sri Lanka

In the morning, after we were done with our breakfast, we started for Bentota. We saw a tea factory and a spice garden on the way. The Spice garden was a nice experience for we could see rare trees, medicinal herbs, and spices. We reached Bentota by 7 PM and checked into our beach facing hotel.

Later we went out to the hotel beach and relaxed for a while – it was a nice refreshing experience and I saw my tiredness fade away as the cool sea breeze touched my face. Back to the hotel after dinner, we had a similar experience, only, this time, it was on our beach facing balcony.
It was a good eventful day that ended well.

The next morning was again marked by an early visit to the beautiful beach and was followed by a delicious breakfast. We set off for Galle at about 12 and reached there within 3-4 hours. We also saw a ‘Masks’ factory on our way and later indulged in some therapeutic shopping when we reached Galle.

At about 6, we were taken to Colombo (2-hour drive) where our driver cum guide took us to a nice eatery that served us delicious burgers!

Day 4: Bidding farewell

Ministry of Crab Colombo

This was our last day and we went to the ‘Ministry of Crab’ – a seafood restaurant in Colombo that is jointly owned by the famous cricketers ‘Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene’. The restaurant was famous for its mouth watering seafood and delicious crabs! It was a nice fulfilling meal after which we were picked up for the airport.

Traditional dance of Kandy

Our journey to Sri Lanka was filled with beautiful landscapes, lush greenery, amazing culture, and smiling friendly people. I had the best time there with my mother and we both totally loved the green and peaceful ambience of the country. The mother-daughter time that we spent there will always be cherished and if given a chance, I would love to go back to this island country with my loved ones.

High Points – shopping and food in Colombo, sightseeing in Kandy, shopping in Galle, beaches of Bentota.

Low Points – Traveling to cities like Bentota and Kandy take up the whole day.

Tips for future travelers – Carry a lot of sunscreen and be prepared to travel a lot if doing multiple city tours like Kandy and Bentota.
