The joy of traveling doubles when you have beautiful people accompanying you and our family trip to Sikkim and Darjeeling is a testimony to that.
With travel on the cards and a motive to spend time together with family, our trip was planned. We finalized Sikkim and trust me that was indeed the best decision made because in the scorching hot period of mid-May, the soothing breeze of North Sikkim was a refreshing delight.
After a lot of surfing and hit & trial methods (thanks to the mighty internet), I came across Travel Triangle. It was our first ever OTA (online travel agency) organized trip and yes like everyone else, we too were quite sceptical of our decision but now that our trip is done – choosing them and getting it managed by their agent on board “Tourepedia” was the best decision made.
It was a hassle free journey for us and the services provided were very good. The 7 Night 8 Day trip ended with smiles on our faces and memories that our worth a lifetime!

The journey was a bit tiring as the distance from the station to Gangtok was of 4 hrs but the scenic beauty and the beautiful weather on the way more than made up for it.
Upon reaching the hotel, we were once again greeted by the hotel staff before checking into our rooms. The rest of the day was spent relaxing at the hotel and also planning for the next one.

Day 2: Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, and Baba Harbhajan Mandir
Since the tourist rush in the month of May was quite high, we were quite relieved when we were able to get the passes for Nathula Pass (Nathula Pass fare is usually not included in the package as it is granted upon the arrival depending on the availability). The trip to Nathula was peaceful and since we all needed to do a carpool, it was once again a very different experience for us.
The snow-capped mountains and chilly weather surrounding us led to an extremely scenic background and we enjoyed every bit of it.
But yes, since we were at a height of 14000 ft approx., the oxygen level did get quite low and we saw quite a few people using camphor (kapoor) to modulate their breathing.
Next up, we proceeded from Nathula to Baba Mandir and on our way back, even enjoyed spending time at the beautiful Tsomgo Lake where we also did a Yak ride.
After the long tiring day, we headed towards our hotel, had our dinner, and then called it a day!
Day 3: Trip to Lachen
Our day started off early as we were scheduled to visit Lachen which takes approximately 6 – 7 hrs to reach from Gangtok. So after the breakfast, we set off for the same. Enjoying our ride in between the clouds and gazing at the beautiful falls (Seven Sisters, the famous one among all) and mountains, we reached Lachen, a beautiful small town surrounded by snow capped mountains all around and yes we were lucky enough to be able to see one from the entrance door of our hotel. Upon arrival, the rest of the day was spent resting and enjoying the streets of the place.
We had our food outside only and among all the things that we ate, the momos were our favourite. Post the dinner, we called it a night.
Day 4: Gurudongmar Lake (The Heaven) and Departure to Lachung
We got up early in the morning and were served breakfast. Then we all got ready and began our journey towards the beautiful Lake Gurudongmar. Upon reaching this magnificent lake, we were so spellbound by its beauty, that it is hard to describe in words.
With the snow-capped mountains surrounding the lake and reflection of clouds falling on it, what made the whole scene even more beautiful was the snowfall that started happening as soon as we reached.
Since the lake is at a height of 18000ft, the oxygen levels did get quite low and we did face some breathing problem. The roads weren’t that good either, so it was a bit hectic when it came to that part.
Later, we returned to our hotel, had lunch, rested for a while and then packed our bags for the next destination on our itinerary which was Lachung.
After a tiring journey of 4-5 hrs, we arrived at Lachung where we were welcomed very warmly by the hotel staff. We had our dinner here post which we called it a night.
Day 5: Zero Point and Yumthang Valley
After the breakfast today, we headed towards Zero Point and Yumthang, enjoying the beautiful views on our way. The Yumthang Valley of flowers or Sikkim Valley of flowers was certainly a treat to the senses. There were colorful flowers all around, a clear blue sky above, snow capped mountains, and the most amazing people as company. It was a perfect combination of nature and love. And we lived it to the core. We also tried Breezer and Maggie here and it was really a perfect combo meal for us.
Zero Point on the other hand was totally covered in snow and was a bit of an adventurous trip for us and yes, we loved it too.
Day 6: Darjeeling here we come!
We were now all set to begin the last phase of our trip so after having our breakfast today, we now headed towards our next destination, Darjeeling. While we had greatly enjoyed the beautiful mountains and waterfalls in our previous destinations, it was now time to enjoy the beautiful tea gardens of Darjeeling.
We reached Darjeeling in the evening and checked into our hotel. After resting for a while, we headed towards the local market, had a nice buffet dinner, spent some quality family time with each other and then called it a night.
Day 7: Tiger Hills and Mirik

We left at 4 am sharp in the morning since we wanted to be on time to see the sunrise from Tiger Hills. And what a beautiful one it was. The rays covered the whole surroundings and we could even see the Kanchenjunga. It was beautiful!
On our way back we headed towards the stupa and saw lots of sites where the shooting of famous movies like “Barfi” and “Mai Hun Na” took place. Later, after we had returned to our hotel and had our breakfast, we decided to visit Mirik.
The journey to Mirik was very picturesque and we really enjoyed the thukpa that we being served at the local eateries there. The roads were surrounded by tea plantations and clouds and after a while, it felt like we were traveling with them.
On our way back we also visited the Pashupati market before returning to Darjeeling where we again roamed around streets, indulged in shopping, and delicious food.
Day 8: Siliguri Railway Station
So, now it was our time to say goodbye to the most cherishable trip of our lives and return back to our scheduled life. So after the breakfast, we left for our station (it is advisable to leave before 4/5 hrs early if you are travelling in the rush season as the traffic might make you miss your respective train/flight.). It was a beautiful journey way back to where we started off. The trip had ended.
Sikkim and Darjeeling were delightful experiences for us. The mountains, sceneries, tea gardens, and everything natural that we witnessed in the hills was so refreshing to our senses that we did not want to leave. Spending quality time with family was another thing that much needed and totally worth the experience. In the end, we took back so many memories that now our heart wants to go back and live them all again!
