On the Eastern side of the Toa Payoh planning area, Toa Payoh New Town. Toa Payoh planning area occupies a larger area and covers estates such as Potong Pasir and Bidadari. In Hokkien, Toa Payoh means ‘big swamp’. Toa Payoh had many old cemeteries in its compound which is why it had the old name in Chinese as Ang Chiang San which means ‘Burial Hill.’ A unique thing about the roads in Toa Payoh is that they have been given Malay street suffixes, example ‘Jalan Toa Payoh’ and ‘Lorong Satu Toa Payoh’.This is because when the idea of making this town appeared, Singapore was a state of Malaysia. Toa Payoh used to be a squatter district and a lot of lands was encroached by them.
The redevelopment work of this region started in 1964 when the squatters started moving out of this area. This also enabled some special services by the government to reach the public, including the increased compensation rates and other services. The second oldest satellite town in Singapore, Toa Payoh New Town is also the first town to be built by the Housing and Development Board (HBD). The first was Queenstown which was built by the Singapore Improvement Trust in the late 1950s. Queen Elizabeth II had visited the area in the years 1972 and 2006.
