About Boon Lay
Boon Lay is a subzone of Jurong West and was named after Chew Boon Lay who was a prominent businessman in the late 19th century and early 20th century. He used to be the owner of the land where the precinct is now located. Later, the war department of the then colonial government of Singapore requisitioned about 1.012 square kilometers of land from his estate. This resulted in the growth of Boon Lay Village in the 1940s.
In the early 1960s, the village population was just 420. In 1969, the initial construction works for Boon Lay Place had started under the Housing and Development Board of Singapore (HDB). The flats in this area had started to be built in 1974. This subzone is a West Coast GRC’s division which comes under the supervision of West Coast Town Council. Patrick Tay, a member of parliament, represents the people living in this area.
About Singapore Cuisine
Singapore cuisine culture is an amalgamation of multiple cultures. The food here is influenced by immigrants from different parts of the world who settled here many years back. Among them, the Chinese immigrants are present in the highest ratio and the Indian are the second largest community settled in Singapore.
In fact, there is a small area called Little India where the Indian community is settled. Since Singapore used to be a part of Malaysia the influence of language and foods is very deep. Rice, Noodles, and Seafood are the three main pillars of Singaporean cuisine. Rice is used in various forms, especially in steamed form. And the best way to consume rice is to take it with their flavourful curries. There are a variety of vegetarian and non – vegetarian curries prepared in Singapore.
The impact of Chinese culture is the reason behind their fondness for noodles. Noodles are easily available in restaurants in Singapore. And being in such close proximity to the sea, Singapore is a seafood loving country. Chilli crab, Shrimp, BBQ Crayfish, Samal stingray, and Steamed bamboo clam are some of the most popular Singaporean seafood dishes. Fruits are also an inseparable element of Singaporean food culture. Durian is one of the most loved fruit in Singapore and you should not return from your Singapore vacation without trying it.
