The palace used to be the home of the royal family of Ubud. The palace was designed by Gusti Nyoman Lempad, a renowned art master. He was instructed by Sukawati royal family and began the construction of the palace in 1951 which got completed in 1952.

Ubud Water Palace is built keeping in mind the Balinese rules of Tri-mandala. The design of the palace consists of three mandala zones which are placed according to a sacred hierarchy. The three mandala zones are Nista mandala, Madya mandala and Utama mandala.

Nista Mandala: The zone which connects the temple to the outer world, Nista mandala holds the entrance to water palace in Ubud. This mandala is marked by a lotus pond and a water garden.

Madya Mandala: This part of the Ubud Water Palace in Gianyar Bali is the middle realm which leads to the inner layers of the sacred temple. It is marked with three red-bricked Kori Agung gates. The third gate is the largest of them all and shows the way to the most sacred space.

Utama Mandala: The most sacred space of the temple is Utama mandala which holds the Padmasana shrine and the statue of the Goddess Saraswati.

How To Reach Ubud Water Palace

Ubud Water Palace can be easily reached as it is in the center of Ubud. If you’re coming from Denpasar, you can rent a car which takes around an hour to reach the temple. From Kuta, it takes one and a half hour. So, plan your visit accordingly.
