Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, together with various stakeholders from the tourism industry, have devised a blueprint for cruise tourism in a meeting held last week, keeping Mumbai as the central hub for this initiative. According to reports, they plan to:
1. Develop Mumbai for Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship
2. Turn Mandwa into a wellness destination
3. Set up floating restaurants at Gateway of India and Girgaum Chowpatty
4. Promoting Mumbai as an ideal wedding destination amid foreigners
The proposed action plan is based out of the idea to popularise the Mumbai-Goa cruise, while also turning places like Sassoon Dock, Kanhoji Angre Island, Alibaug, Sewree Fort, Vijaydurg, and of course, Mandwa, into tourist hotspots.
The Centre has already laid out a roadmap to measure the effectiveness of the plan, according to which the number of cruise tourists would most likely go up till 4.5 million by 2042-43. Some of the measures the government has put in place to promote cruise tourism in India are:
- Removing ousting charges
- Offering a 42-66% discount on port charges
- Giving cruise tourists e-visa & on-arrival visa facilities
