Baron Édouard Empain, a Belgian industrialist, arrived in Egypt in 1904 with ambitious plans to expand his commercial empire and build railway lines. In 1906, he commissioned French architect Ernest Jaspar to design a unique architectural style for the newly established suburb of Heliopolis. This blend of Persian and neoclassical European elements gave rise to what became known as the “Heliopolis style.” The city flourished, attracting people from around the world, and the Baron’s palace became a cultural hub. Legends surrounding the palace include rumours of a hidden daughter with a mysterious condition and tragic events that contributed to its haunted reputation.

After Baron Empain’s death in 1929 and political upheaval in Egypt in 1952, the palace fell into disuse. In the 1990s, some rebellious young people broke into and damaged the abandoned building, causing a strong reaction from conservatives who even accused them of Satanism. However, in 2005, the Egyptian government took over the palace and declared it a historical monument. They teamed up with the Belgian government to restore the palace and turn it into an international art and cultural centre, starting renovations in 2016.
