The castle was built in 1593 by Ferdinand, 5th Earl of Derby and second heir to the throne. The castle has served many special guests like King William II and members of the Stuart Family. It was in 1982 when the castle was restored and made open to the public as a hotel to stay. Liverpool Castle stood the testaments of time from 13th to 18th century and was one of the oldest castles in Liverpool. It was built by the orders of 4th Earl of Derby in 1232 to protect King John’s new port. The imposing castle was built on top of a plateau overlooking the River Mersey. What remains of the castle is a bronze plaque on the Victoria Monument in Derby Square. The replica of the castle also exists in Lever Park, Rivington.

3. Halton Castle, Runcorn

Located on top of Halton Hill, this ancient castle in Liverpool has now been recorded as National Heritage List for England as a Grade 1 structure. It once used to be the seat of the Barons of Halton from 11th to the 14th century before it was passed down to Duchy of Lancaster. Its structure was deteriorated after it was seized twice during the time of the Civil War and is now recognized as a monument. The ruins of the castle have now been converted into a pub where you can enjoy a mug of lager. It is only an hour drive from Liverpool.

4. Beeston Castle, Cheshire

Built in the 1220s, Beeston Castle is one of the most dramatic and medieval castles in Liverpool. It was built by the 6th Earl of Derby after his return from the Crusades. The castle was demolished in 1646 by the orders from Cromwell. What remains now are the walls of inner and outer Bailey. The castle is situated over Cheshire Plain, hence, it offers staggering views of the landscape. You can even see all the way from the Pennines to the Welsh mountains on a clear day. It is just an hour drive from Liverpool.

5. Bodelwyddan Castle, Denbighshire

One of the oldest castles in Liverpool, Bodelwyddan is a 15th-century manor house and display the best of Welsh architecture. The mansion is located close to the village of Bodelwyddan and was residence to Humphrey family for a long time. The castle has now been turned into a museum and family-friendly attraction where people come to admire the Welsh art displays and replica of WW1 trench. The sprawling gardens of the castle are altogether an attraction in itself.

Located inside the city of Chester, the medieval castle is one of the few remaining examples of neo-classical architecture. It was built by Thomas Harrison in the time period of 1788 to 1813. The grand castle looks over the River Dee and is surrounded by the strong city walls. The first stone gateway to Chester Castle, Agricola Tower, was built in the 12th century. The castle is open to the public as a museum where the visitors can have guided tours and explore the history of the castle.
