Vision Behind The Floating City
According to the facts, around 90% of the world’s largest global cities are prone to rising sea levels. And this will result in erosion and flooding in the future. To curb that threat of huma displacement and permanent infrastructure damage, the idea of a floating city looks like a ray of hope. As per the experts, the floating city will self-sustaining which can be a saviour for the coastal communities being flooded by rising sea levels. Mr Kisob further added that the “next step would be to design the prototype which can be tried and tested along with the help of partners from the private sector.
To support the UN-Habitat’s New Urban Agenda, the non-profit organisation Oceanix has come forward and designed the blueprint for the world’s first sustainable floating community. Alongside that the UN-Habitat is also working with the MIT’s Centre for Ocean Engineering to ensure if these structures can sustain the category five weather conditions which includes Tsunamis, hurricanes and other severe weather extremities.
