If you get carsick easily and biking all the way up to one of the world’s highest pass is not your thing, the new Manali Rohtang Pass heli–taxi service will fly you over the valley to the gateway of heaven – Lahaul and Spiti Valley.
From July 1 onwards, you can enjoy the six-seater helicopter ride service which will cover 50 km distance between Manali and Rohtang Pass and significantly cut down the travel time from 3 hours to approximately 20 minutes (going by the distance and elevation between Manali and Rohtang Pass). The new helipads have been constructed in Vashisht Bahal, 2 km from Manali, and Marhi near Rohtang Pass. The construction of six more helipads in the nearby areas is also under the pipeline.
Manali-Rohtang Pass, which connects lush green Kullu Valley with the arid Spiti Valley, needs no introduction. When the pass opens for the tourists in summers, a long line of tourist vehicles can be seen tailgating behind each other. But if you are flying at 10,350 ft above the ground, you can not only avoid the back-breaking road journey but can also experience the dramatic shift in the landscape and scenery.

Additionally, the new Manali Rohtang Pass heli-taxi service will add a new dimension to the tourism sector in the region by attracting a lot more travelers in the coming years. It will also be used for contingencies like landslides. However, it should also be noted that the service will strictly be subjected to the weather since snowstorms and blizzards are very common in the region.
The heli-taxi service comes after the successful launch of Chandigarh-Shimla heli-taxi service last month. Commenting on the same, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jai Ram Thakur, has also mentioned the upcoming helipad services between Dharamshala to Chamba and Dalhousie to Manali.
And yes, we do agree one can enjoy picturesque views of the Kullu Valley while riding on a bike or driving a car, but if you want to fly over snow-capped mountains and experience a visual treat like none other, we would recommend you to use the newly introduced helicopter joy ride and begin your trip to Manali with a bang!
