The twin villages of Bir & Billing boast of year-round picturesque views and pleasant temperatures. Camping under the stars with live music & bonfire is sure to set the perfect mood for the celebrations of New Year 2017. Chail and Shimla are two wonderful weekend getaways from Delhi. While there aren’t many things to do in Chail on a short weekend trip, I discovered with my college friends that partying in these hill stations of Himachal is surprisingly a great option. The snow-clad hills and the starry envelope of the night sky are perfect for a night party and bonfire for the New Year’s eve. You can also visit Shimla on your return journey to Delhi.

How to reach Chail & Shimla from Delhi?

Chail is situated 336 km from Delhi. Shimla is a further 45 km from Chail. Both these hill stations are well connected by a rail network. One can take a train up to Kalka, followed by a toy train to Shimla. Alternatively, a direct train to Kandaghat (30 km from Chail) can be taken. But I personally prefer the road journey. The scenic journey never ceases to amaze me. And I am sure the experience will not be any different for you either.

Why should you be heading to Chail & Shimla this New Year?

Shimla has been the most popular weekend getaway from Delhi and other cities of North India – be it for couples, for families, or for a group of friends. And Chail, because of its proximity to Shimla, is often visited by those who prefer walking on the untrodden ways. From my personal experience, I can tell that the two hill stations are wonderful for a weekend escape.

Be it the Chail Cricket Ground & the Sidh Baba Temple in Chail or the numerous places to visit in Shimla, including Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, & Mall Road, there is a plethora of tourist attractions that you can visit. Add to it a DJ party with a bonfire at night and you are in for a wonderful New Year party in Shimla & Chail.

Ideal trip duration: 1N/2D in Chail & Shimla

And how much would such a trip cost you?

A typical 1-night & 2 days holiday in Shimla and Chail would ideally cost you around INR 5,000 per person; inclusive of the costs of sightseeing, 1-night stay, 2 meals per day, and transfers.

    3. Dalhousie & Khajjiar

    A panoramic shot of Dalhousie

Pine & oak trees & green pastures of Dalhousie and snow-covered areas in Khajjiar are what makes the duo a great weekend getaway from Delhi. The alluring places to visit in Dalhousie, together with its scenic views & salubrious environs, will surely make a trip to Dalhousie for the New Year bash totally worth it. And the optional adventurous things to do in Dalhousie will only add to the excitement that the destination offers.

How to reach Dalhousie from Delhi?

The cities of Delhi and Dalhousie are 560 km apart. Khajjiar is situated 21 km beyond Dalhousie. A train journey from Delhi to Pathankot and a further 80 km road journey will take you to Dalhousie. But I have always loved the road journey from Delhi to Dalhousie more, simply because it gives me the option to stop en route to enjoy the picturesque views. Try it! You wouldn’t regret, I am sure.

Why should you be heading to Dalhousie this New Year?

The very fact that the beauty of Khajjiar has earned it the title of Mini Switzerland of India should convince you for a trip to Dalhousie. A DJ party & bonfire in such a beauteous destination surely makes me interested. And this is just the beginning. With Chamera Lake, Dainkund Peak, Panjpulla waterfall and other places to visit in Dalhousie, the destination offers a splendid taste of beauty. And if you want something more exciting, you can go for paragliding, zorbing, and trekking in Khajjiar.

Ideal trip duration: 2N/3D in Dalhousie

And how much would such a trip cost you?

Well, a complete trip to Dalhousie costed me around INR 7,000. This included the costs of a room on twin-sharing basis for 2 nights, 2 meals daily, and transfers. I had to shell out an extra INR 1,500 for paragliding.

And if you think that I have been exaggerating, read an account of Rupanshi’s first ever trek on a weekend escapade to Dalhousie that instilled insatiable wanderlust in her.

    4. Dhanaulti

A morning shot of the Camp o Royale in Dhanualti

This hill station of Uttarakhand is located 302 km from Delhi. The nearest railheads – Dehradun & Rishikesh – are situated at a distance of 63 km and 80 km from Dhanaulti respectively. And so as to avoid the hassle of changing the mode of transport, I prefer a road trip to Dhanaulti.

Why should you be heading to Dhanaulti this New Year?

The whole idea of snow camping under the stars with DJ & a bonfire on the New Year’s eve excites me. Light adventure activities at the camp like Burma Bridge & Mowgli Walk and trekking through the surrounding forests are other things that you can do in Dhanaulti. And if you want a relaxing trip, Dhanaulti Eco Park, Deogarh Fort, and Dashavatar Temple are some of the places to visit in Dhanaulti.

Ideally, you should be able to wrap up your trip to Dhanaulti for 1 night and 2 days from Delhi in a little over INR 4,500. Anything below this price would be wonderful.

Just in case you need to validate my description, read about how Radhika’s quest for peace & beauty, which brought her to Dhanaulti, left her mesmerised.

A scene from the Jim Corbett safari

Jim Corbett, located near Nainital in Uttarakhand, finds its place among the best national parks in India. While the park sees a large tourist footfall primarily for its tigers, it is possible to spot several species of deer, leopards, jackals, red foxes, black bear, sloth bear, and monkeys as well. And it is not just the jeep safaris in the national park that makes it a wonderful weekend getaway from Delhi. The world-class resorts nestled inside & around the forest provide perfect settings for a rave New Year party in Jim Corbett.

How to reach Jim Corbett from Delhi?

Situated 246 km away from Delhi, Jim Corbett is accessible by both rail and roads. But the nearest railway head, Ramnagar, is located 86 km from Jim Corbett. And so, I prefer going to Jim Corbett by road.

Why should you be heading to Jim Corbett this New Year?

A DJ party in the middle of the forest is surely something that you must experience. And the winter season is perfect to take the jeep safaris at Jim Corbett. I would also recommend you to try adventure activities, including trekking, jungle safari, rock climbing, rappelling, flying fox, and valley crossing.
