While planning for our vacation, we had a few places in mind. We both like to explore new places and enjoy the untouched nature and landscape. We wanted to go to a place which isn’t as explored and commercialized as one of the popular destinations of Asia.

So, we narrowed down the destinations to two; my choice was Vietnam, and his was Sri Lanka. We ultimately chose Sri Lanka because, it wasn’t the right season to visit the certain places we wanted to cover in Vietnam. Also, we heard a lot positive reviews about Sri Lanka from our friends who had been there.

I came across TravelTriangle while searching for travel tour companies on the internet. The quotations given by TravelTriangle were very competitive and the itinerary given by the agent was flexible and accommodative. With a lot of effort in our respective offices, my husband and I managed to carve out six days from our packed schedule at work to celebrate our anniversary with each other.

Day 1:Climbing the incredible Sigiriya Rock Fortress

We took a flight from Hyderabad and landed in Colombo, Sri Lanka at 3 am. From there, we traveled to our village resort in Sigiriya called Joe’s Habarana Village. After freshening up at the resort,we began exploring with a visit to the Dambulla Caves.

That was followed by a trip to the Sigiriya Fortress. We climbed the 1400 steps all the way up the rock, which was very challenging. However, the view at the top was extraordinarily beautiful and worth the effort reaching there. From the top, we had a panoramic view of the ancient ruins and the forest. We liked being there so much, that we stayed at the top for a few more hours. As it grew dark, we decided to return to the resort and call it a day.

After breakfast, we checked out and traveled to Kandy. On our way, we stopped by at the Pinnawala elephant orphanage, where we had a great time greeting the rescued elephants. I was in love with the orphanage, and the kind deed they were doing of caring for these humble giants.

Later on, we visited the serene Kandy Lake. The lake had a beautiful aura surrounded by little shops and houses all around it for sightseeing. In the evening, we were taken to a cultural show in kandy, which showed the various dance forms and recitals preserved in Sri Lanka. After the show got over, we walked back to our hotel in the night, had dinner, and slept for the night.

Day 3: Finding jewels enroute Nuwara Eliya

The next day, we checked out of Kandy and started our journey to Nuwara Eliya. Enroute, we stopped at a few places, starting with the scenic Ramboda Falls. Next up, was a visit to the Botanical Garden. It was an interesting day for my husband as he a lot of interest in horticulture.

The journey to Nuwara Eliya was long, but the views were absolutely incredible. The journey wound up with a visit to a delightful strawberry farm just outside Nuwara Eliya. What a sweet end to our day, as we checked into the Grand Camellia Hotel at night.

Day 4: Another charming adventure in Mirissa

After breakfast, we checked out of Nuwara Eliya and started our journey to Mirissa. On the way, we visited a tea factory and tea plantations. The greenery in the plantations with the fresh fragrance of the leaves, was something that for a very long time I couldn’t forget.

Next up, we visited a very famous sita temple which was a part of the ramayana trail in sri lanka. On the way, we also stopped by at Galle and had a delicious seafood lunch at a small restaurant. Next up, we arrived at fisherman’s bay in Mirissa and got passes for the next day’s activity of whale watching. We felt very exhausted that day, and ended up chilling out at the hotel in the evening.

Day 5: Leisure + luxury in Bentota

The next morning, we got ready at sunrise to go for whale watching on a speed boat. It was a memorable time as we saw four huge blue whales. We returned to our hotel to check out from there and move on to Bentota.

We had taken a luxury hotel (Heritance Ahungalla) for our final night in Sri Lanka. We had done a lot of sightseeing by then, and it would’ve been nice to relax in the pool with a drink in hand, getting spoilt by luxuries, and spending quality time with each other. The hotel organized a candlelight dinner for us which was very personalized and romantic.

Day 6: Shopping like crazy in Sri Lanka

The next morning, we had breakfast, and checked out of the hotel in Bentota. On the way to Colombo, we visited a beautiful turtle hatchery. Our driver took us a to a few shops where we would get excellent wood carvings at a competitive price.

In Colombo, we did the traditional touristy sightseeing by visiting Galle Face and independence square. Later on, my husband and I indulged in binge shopping. So much so that, at one point, we thought all of this won’t fit into our bags completely. Crazy indeed, but we managed to zip it all in somehow. Afterwards, we got dropped at the airport for our late night flight back to Hyderabad.

To this day, I often run out of adjectives when I try to summarize Sri Lanka. The beautiful island country has a tenacity to surprise you with its diverse culture, natural landscape, and friendly inhabitants. I feel, vacations like these are incredibly important for my husband and I to keep that romantic spark alive in our marriage. A special thanks to TravelTriangle for providing an unforgettable experience.
