The Guruvayurappan Temple has been constructed in the Kerala architectural style with detailed intricacy on each wall. The flooring is made of granite, and each pillar holds statues. The walls are covered with murals from the 17th century. The gates of the temple open in the east direction and leading you to the temple are bejewelled with the idol of Lord Krishna.

The idol is a four-armed Vishnu standing with a lotus, mace, discus and a conch in each hand. Shri Krishna’s idol is believed to be made of a special stone called Patala Anjamana. The stone is said to have remarkable healing and magical properties. The idol is seated on the Sreekovil, a sacred sanctum of the temple. There are images of other gods in this area as well.

1. Guruvayur Utsavam

This popular festival is celebrated for ten days in February or March. The Festival begins by hoisting a flag on the 70-foot-high Dwajasthambam. The elephant race takes place on the first day, and for the next six days, a procession of elephants is carried.
On the 8th day, offerings are made to the god, who is known as Utsava Bali. The 9th day is the hunting journey, symbolising the destruction of one’s desires, anger, and jealousy. On the last day, eleven circumambulations are done, and then the lord is seated back in the sanctum. The flag is brought down, marking the end of the festival.

The Ekadasi festival is celebrated in Guruvayur on the 11th day of Vrishchika, which falls during the Mandala season. The Navami and Dasami days are also considered significant. The month preceding the Vilakku Ekadasi is marked by offerings made by individuals, families, and organisations.

This is celebrated in April as the first day of the Malayali calendar. According to this, the first thing a person sees when waking up determines their year ahead. Hence, devotees line up and blindfold themselves to worship Lord Krishna.

Guruvayur temple darshan timings start from the break of dawn at 3 AM. The temple is open to all the devotees from 3 AM to 9 PM with a break between 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The temple follows an elaborate routine of poojas done by the priest each having a different meaning and importance. Depending on the crowd, it might take 5 to 6 hours to complete the temple visit. Guruvayurappan Temple has the best weather from October to February, with temperatures in the range of 23 to 32 degrees Celsius. This period has comfortable weather and relatively less rainfall, so it is suitable for exploring other places, depending on your time limit.
