As unique as the place’s name is, Illikkal Kallu comprises three distinct rock formations: Illikkal Mala, Kuda Kallu, and Koonu Kallu. When translated, it means Illikkal rocks, which depicts the presence of these unique and stunning rock formations. The largest, Illikkal Mala, is an abrupt formation, making trekking to this hill difficult for the trekkers.

Kuda Kallu, meaning “umbrella rock,” resembles a mushroom or an umbrella with its wide top and narrow base. Koonu Kallu, or “hunchback rock,” has a very unconventional shape, like a hunchback. Beyond the beauty of these rock formations on top of the mountain, the region is blessed with multiple other stunning landscapes and mountain streams that flow down and combine with the Meenachil River.

Despite the amazing beauty of the Illikkal Kallu, the place has little historical significance. However, it holds cultural importance for the Indigenous communities residing in the Western Ghats. Multiple ancient caves and rudimentary structures were dedicated to distinct ritualistic practices in the past. One tale about the Illikkal Kallu history of this natural rock formation is that it contains the ‘neelakodiveli’ plant, a medicinal plant mentioned in the Puranas. Some legends say that anyone who touches the plant becomes rich.

Another tale is associated with the exile of the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. One fine day, Bheema from the Pandavas asked Panchali for some food. When she failed to serve it on time, Bheema, in rage, threw an “ulakka”, and the area where it fell later formed “Ulakkapara thodu.”
