Here you can find Copper plate inscriptions of Bhaskara Ravivarma’s reign, a Chera king, that indicate the presence of the temple. These plates originally belong to the 10th century. There are literature works that also give an indication that Thirunelli was a significant pilgrim hub during Bhaskara Ravivarma’s reign. A few of those items include the Kokila Sandesham and Unniyachi Charitham .
But no records or evidence exist to confirm the specific dates of the temple’s construction. This temple was made in dedication to Lord Shiva. Thus, Thirunelli is a temple blessed by three main gods: Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Near the Papanashini stream, you can view the Panchatheertham, a sacred pond. It is believed that five water streams met here in the earlier times. You can spot thick bushes around the pond and also an interesting foot imprint of Lord Vishnu on a stone slab in the middle of this pond.

It is situated in Chengannur, Alappuzha District in Kerala. On the west side of the temple lies the cave temple Gunnika, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
