The temple was built by the Bundela Rajputs of the kingdom of Orchha, by Madhukar Shah in the early 16th century. The temple was built as a dedication to the queen’s beloved, Lord Rama, and was meant to honour her deep devotion to him. Though her husband, Madhukar Shah, was a devotee of Krishna, he respected his wife’s wishes and agreed to support her in this endeavour.

According to mythology, before they began construction, Rani Ganeshkuwari made a pilgrimage to Ayodhya to obtain an image of Lord Rama. Once she returned with the sacred image, she kept it safe in her palace until the temple could be completed. However, there was a strict rule that any image meant for deification in a temple could not be kept within a palace. As soon as the temple was finally finished and began to move the image of Lord Rama for installation, it mysteriously refused to budge from its place. This strange occurrence led many to believe that the queen had indeed been blessed by the divine presence of Lord Rama himself. In the end, a small shrine was built within the palace grounds to house the sacred image of Lord Rama. This way, both the queen’s devotion could be honoured and the original intention of building the temple could be upheld. To this day, the Chaturbhuja Temple stands as a testament to the enduring love and faith of Rani Ganeshkuwari and her people.
