Bharmour is supposed to belong to Lord Shiva the Hindu God. Because of this, it is popularly referred to with the nickname of Shivabhumi, which literally means the abode of Lord Shiva. Bharmour has both a legend associated with it and recorded facts that detail its history. It is recorded that the first person to settle in 2 was Meru. Meru was the father of the first recorded prince in the Chamba Vanshavali, Jaistambh. The family descended from one of the ruling families in Ayodhya. The area was won over after Meru, with his son, penetrated the upper Ravi Valley and fought off the Ranas who had surrounded the territory. .
According to legends, Bharmour, officially referred to as Brahampura, got its latter name from an ancient kingdom in the territories of Garhwal and Kumaon. King Meru gave this name to Bharmour to honour the ancient Brahampura kingdom. Bharmour was the capital of the new kingdom over which Meru ruled. Bharmour remained the capital for nearly four hundred years until Sahil Varman conquered the lower Ravi Valley area, which had fertile soil. The capital was shifted there to Chamba.
