Choa Chu Kang Way was named after a historical site called Chua Chu Kang Village which is located next to the junction of Jalan Sungei Poyan and Choa Chu Kang Road. This site is now taken over by the National Shooting Centre which is an organization under the Singapore Shooting Association. The name of this site has a very in-depth history. The name ‘Choa Chu Kang’ is derived from the Teochew dialect’s word ‘kang chu’. In this, ‘Kang’ stands for the ‘riverbank’ and ‘chu’ stands for ‘master’ or ‘owner’. During the 19th century, many folks from China migrated to farm gambier and pepper at the Choa Chu Kang’s river banks. Many of them, also migrated to the north to Johor according to the suggestion of Temenggong of Johor. These plantation owners were named as ‘Kangchu’. And the first headman of this Kangchu group was a part of the ‘Choa’ clan. This is how Choa Chu Kang Way got its long name.
