The lovely village of Mawlynnong is in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. It is the ideal holiday destination if you want to escape your busy life for a few days to enjoy peace. It is located no more than 90 km from the capital city of Shillong and is often referred to as “God’s Own Garden”, given how clean it is. Discover India magazine named this the cleanest village of Asia in 2003 and of India in 2005. Mawlynnong is well-known for its abundant natural beauty, and it is also very famous for its cleanliness. Not only are the village’s green spaces well-maintained and kept in pristine condition but the town is also known for its many ecological practices. The village’s residents must participate in cleanliness initiatives due to a community mandate.

Waste here is collected in dustbins made of bamboo and then converted into manure for further use. The use of polythene is banned here, as is smoking. Rainwater harvesting is a common practice here. It is also owing to its reputation as a clean and ecological destination that the number of tourists visiting Mawlynnong has increased significantly, which has helped increase the residents’ income. Furthermore, the village is also synonymous with a high literacy rate. The primary occupation of its residents is agriculture, and betel nuts are the main crop here. However, if you visit during the summers, you will be able to see lychees and pineapples grown here.

The village is not home to many tourist attractions, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing to see here. It is a paradise for nature lovers, consisting of sprawling green gardens, fruit orchids, dense forests where you can hike, and gushing streams. It also houses one of Meghalaya’s most popular attractions, the Nohwet Living Root Bridge, resulting from the Ficus Elastica tree’s roots intertwining over the years. These living root bridges have long been associated with the Khasi community and are integral to their traditional architecture. The more time that passes, the stronger and sturdier these bridges become.

As mentioned above, the village features 3 churches. One is the Church of the Epiphany, built over a hundred years ago and reminiscent of beautiful European architecture. The surrounding greenery only makes the church look more charming. If you are feeling adventurous, treehouses near the church have been built from bamboo. If you climb up into one of them, you will be treated to marvellous views of some of Bangladesh’s fields.
