Mallalli Falls originates from the Kumardhara River, a chief tributary of the Netravati River. It is believed that pilgrims crossing Kukke Subhramanya Temple in Subhramanya must cross this river to take a holy bath before entering the temple. The total length of this river is about 40 km, as it passes through two major towns: Kukke Subhramanya and Uppinangadi.

Mallalli Falls is a relatively new tourist site compared to other tourist sites in India. It was only in the knowledge of locals that it did not welcome many visitors due to a lack of infrastructure, poor connectivity, and relatively denser forests. It was not until recently that the government upscaled this site by building better roads that ensure better connectivity and increased the number of homestays and resorts around it. Now, visitors can find a comfortable spot to relax and book resorts for an easy stay and easily traverse from any part of the country due to its phenomenal connectivity to the main cities.
