Located in the Central Region of Singapore, Tanglin is a popular planning area in the country. It is situated on the west of Newton, Orchard, River Valley and Singapore River, east of Bukit Timah, northeast of Queenstown, north of Bukit Merah, and south of Novena.

The house of William Napier which is situated in this area on 27 hectares of hilly land is where Tanglin Road gets its name. Earlier the Napier Road used to go up to the Tyersall house of William Napier. The house which was constructed in 1854 used to be called Tang Leng in Chinese, as it was named after the popular name in China, Twa Tang Leng. The name ‘Twa Tang Leng’ means ‘great east hill peaks’, which is assumed to be a reference to the many hills located in this region that include Leonie, Emerald, Goodwood Nassim, Mount Elizabeth, Cluny, Cairn, and Claymore

In 1822, after Stamford Raffles allotted the land, the Chinese, especially Teochews, came out of Chinatown and colonized the Tanglin area which was infested by tigers. The Chinese grew sireh, pepper, nutmeg, and gambie in this area. After the Chinese, the Europeans, especially Scotsmen also entered this region and started doing spice plantations. The Europeans also constructed built bungalows and villas on many of the hills in Tanglin.

A striking characteristic of Tanglin is the name of the places that it consist of. These places have been named after many Scottish personals. For instance – Balmoral has been named after the favorite residence of Queen Victoria located in Scotland. Similarly, Edinburgh has been named after the Duke of Edinburgh, who had visited Singapore in 1869. And, Claymore is the name of a house owned by Captain Scott who was the harbormaster. He is the same person after in memory of whom the Scotts Road was named. Tyersall, Cluny, and Scott are some other examples of the same.

A popular landmark of Tanglin is the Tanglin Post Office building. It is a two-storey pre-war building which was located at the corner of Tanglin Road and Nassim Hill. The building was brought down and a new post office replaced it. The old Tanglin Post Office was the premises of the Ministry of Science and Technology of those days and the Social Council until 1974 when it was turned into an office cum delivery base.

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) asked for proposals to develop the Dempsey Road area when it brought two new tenders for sites on 7 November 2006. It was also announced that SLA had plans for this region for up to the year 2015. The former Central Manpower Base which is now known as Tanglin Village and has been turned into a commercial plaza which can be reached through car or taxi. There is also a very interesting building known as the barracks buildings which house various commercial establishments like shops, restaurants, and galleries.
