The Moon Plains Nuwara Eliya were not always like this. During the 90s, the plains consisted of a 40-metre-deep and 400-metre-long valley and were a region of the catchment area. Soon, developments in the area began and the government decided to preserve the entire area to protect the flora and fauna of the region. The ecological value of the area was given importance and the government wanted it to become a tourist spot so locals and foreigners could witness the marvellous place. In 2014, the Moon Plains, also called Sandathanna in Sinhalese, was established and it became a part of the Agricultural and Environmental Tourism Zone and was opened to the public.
The Moon Plains at Nuwara Eliya are also called the ‘second world’s end’ as they provide an experience similar to Horton Plains. You can find biodiversity at every corner of the Moon Plains and this is what makes it among the best destinations for nature enthusiasts. Apart from the views of the close by valleys, you can also get a 360-degree glimpse of the various mountain ranges. These include the Konical Hill Mountain, Hakgala Mountain, Pidurutalaga Mountain, Thotupola Mountain, Single Tree Mountain, Namunukula Mountain, Great Western Mountain, Kikiliyamana Mountain, and Kirigalpoththa Mountain.
