In the Fatimid Caliphate (909–1171), an old chapel was turned into a mosque. This mosque is still used for special events today, but it was used more often until the 13th century during the Mamluk Sultanate period.
In the seventh century, the isolated Christian anchorites of the Sinai were eliminated, leaving only the fortified monastery. Enormous defences encircling the Monastery have kept it intact. Access was granted until the 20th century through a door high in the outer walls.
