It is believed that this is the first place where Sir Stamford Raffles had landed for the first time in Singapore. There are many interesting things to do in Raffles Place Singapore.
About Raffles Landing Place
Raffles Landing Place is the site where on 28 January 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles had landed in Singapore. He stayed here for 10 days and during his stay, he made the first treaty with the local rulers of this land. This place is located on the northern bank of the Singapore River and is marked by an iconic statue structure of Sir Stamford Raffles. But the real statue was made in the year 1887 has been installed opposite to the popular Victoria Concert Halls. The current statue that has been installed at the site was unveiled in 1972. It is made of poly-marble using the plaster casts of the original Raffles’ statue. There is also a statement or declaration under the statue that says “On this historic site, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles first landed in Singapore on 28th January 1819, and with genius and perception changed the destiny of Singapore from an obscure fishing village to a great seaport and modern metropolis.”
In 2019, the 200th-anniversary of Founding of modern Singapore was celebrated and as a part of it, many changes were done to the statue and around it. Among all the alteration, one of the most creative works was done on the statue of Sir Stamford Raffles. The statue was made to camouflage with the buildings standing in the backdrop at Raffles Place. This created an illusion of the statue ‘disappearing’. Another experiment around Sir Stamford Raffles’ statue was the installation of many other statues of Raffles’ contemporaries such as Munshi Abdullah, Tan Tock Seng, and Naraina Pillai along with the statue of Sang Nila Utama, the founder of the Kingdom of Singapura.
