Almora was founded in the year 1568 by a Chand ruler. There are some mentions of human settlements in the mountains and surrounding parts of the town of Mahabharata. Almora is considered to be the cultural core of the Kumaon region. It was the seat of the Chand Dynasty kings who ruled over the Kingdom of Kumaon. One of the rulers, Raja Kalyan Chand, was the ruler. Later on, the Gorkhas captured the town of Almora (1790 AD), and eventually, the British won over it after the wars of 1814 and 1815. Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned in jail in Almora during the British aristocracy.

Almora is situated in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. It is about 365 km from New Delhi, around 415 km from Dehradun and 63 km from Nainital.
