Lush plantations, serene backwaters, houseboat, wildlife safari and bucket-loads of amusement – this is just a peep into Vishu Aggarwal’s honeymoon trip to Kerala. Having booked a 5D/4N package through TravelTriangle, Vishu got his accommodation, transfers in an AC cab, houseboat rental and meals secured for INR 25,000. Look out, as he brings the trip alive in a personal account of his experience.
Kerala is a honeymooner’s paradise and bitten by the charm of this blessed state, I decided to make it my honeymoon destination. While I was ideating the trip, a friend prompted the name of TravelTriangle. I took up his suggestion and finalized the package with Zamorin Holidays through TravelTriangle.
Day 1: Sightseeing in Kochi
On landing in Kochi I couldn’t help but notice the difference in the weather. My wife Prachi and I had started the trip from Delhi which was freezing while Kochi was bright and sunny. We took a taxi to our hotel and reached around 10 am. Our hotel stood as a lone beauty on the top of a hill and the windows of our room opened to an enchanting view. We unpacked, managed our things and prepared to leave for the sightseeing tour. We had booked a private cab throughout our stay in Kerala.
Our first drive around the city of Kochi took us to the Old Harbour Fort, St. Francis Church and the Marine Drive. While the former two acquainted us with a few pages of history, the Marine Drive was rather an exciting mix. In Marine Drive, we got to enjoy 30-35 km of a thrilling ride on a jetty in the backwaters, which turned out to be one of the most enjoyable experiences on the trip. We had opted for the longest cruise — a 1 hour 20 min ride at INR 2000 (for two).

While coming back from the sightseeing tour, we also made a brief stop at the Rose Garden. The display of a variety of roses was pleasing to the eyes but at the same time, did not offer anything beyond it. We came back to the hotel, took our dinner and further explored the hotel’s premises.

Day 2: Munnar – The tea town of Kerala
With a mesmerizing aroma of spices filling up the vast expanse of tea plantations, lush valleys, and mountains — Munnar is definitely a must visit in Kerala. On the second day of our honeymoon in Kerala, we were booked for Munnar. Our breakfast was served early on request since we had to leave for Munnar (which is 130 km from Kochi). On the way, we were greeted by the Cheeyappara Waterfalls, where we stopped for an hour’s break before heading for the Spice Plantations. At the Plantations, we hired a guide. This guy took us through a detailed tour, introducing us to distinct varieties of spices. The beautiful aroma compelled us to visit the nearby retail store of tea and spices. We took home some unique, one-of-its-kind spices; with a satisfaction of having bought authentic good-quality products.
Since our stomachs were rumbling after hours of walking, we filled ourselves with South Indian cuisines before proceeding for hotel Bella Rista. We freshened up quickly and left for the Dreamsland Spice Park, 14 km away from Munnar.
I was eagerly looking forward to the adventure and my thirst was quenched with the 25-30 rides available at the Dreamsland Spice Park. At a price of INR 600, we were able to enjoy Shooting, Maze of Mirrors, the Horror Show, Ropeway, Sky-Walk, Tyre walk, Zip Line and a lot more. But the cable car ride within the park turned out to be my favorite. We spent a good 3-4 hour at the park and ended the visit with a camel ride. Nothing else could have given a better closure to the day.
Day 3: Sightseeing in Munnar
The next day, after breakfast, we set off for the sightseeing tour in Munnar. A local market in Munnar became our first stop, followed by our visit to the Mattupetty Dam. There again, we got to indulge in a speed boat ride — much to my delight. There were elephants standing on one side of the dam, splashing around and playing with water. We couldn’t have afforded to miss the beauty, so we purchased tickets for boating. The scene was set and we spent some quiet, quality time in each other’s company.
From the dam, we were to leave for the Echo Point. It was the way to the Echo Point which actually blew my mind. We drove past the tea carpet — an unending greenery spread as far as the eyes could see! Before reaching the Echo Point, we halted at a tea factory and witnessed how tea is processed. Finally, we arrived at the Echo Point — where we began shouting just to make the valleys repeat our voices. It was crazy!
Day 4: Thekkady – Bring the adventure on!
The distance between Thekkady and Munnar is one hundred and ten kilometers. Although reaching Thekkady did not take much time, the journey was amazing — with the presence of mountains on one side of the road and the plantations on the other. Complementing these serene views of nature, we soon got to indulge in the ATV ride and Elephant ride at The Persian Paradise. Just when I had started to feel that it couldn’t get better than this — Wildlife Safari was set to seize the day.
After the happening two hours at the Persian Paradise, we got picked up for the Wildlife Safari at the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. We had hired a jeep and at a price of INR 3500 for 3 hours (for just the two of us) and enjoyed every moment of it. We were taken through a scenic drive through the jungle, where we had a close encounter with elephants and deer. We did not come across many animals since it was afternoon. As the jeep struggled to maintain balance over the seemingly-untrodden paths, we had the most rugged 70 km ride ever. Occasionally, I even took the wheel to try my hands at the jeep.
The experience at the safari was thrilling, but tiring. We got back from the safari and at the recommendation of our driver, went to the Mudra Kathakali Center to experience a traditional dance show of Kerala. The cab driver managed the tickets for us (INR 200 per head) and the day was spent well.
Day 5: A day in a houseboat
The last day of our honeymoon had arrived and it was time to finally add a romantic touch to the whole mix of the experience. So we loaded our cab with the luggage and took off to Alleppey to experience the charm of the houseboat. We entered our single-room houseboat at around 12 noon, eager to spend our day in the unusual house. The accommodation was good and we were welcomed with drinks. The boat started the tour and we got to witness enchanting views offered by the backwaters and the surrounding greens

The houseboat stay was turning out to be the one out of a dream, but only until the boat was parked. Our boat stopped amidst a cluster of other houseboats and soon, we grew uncomfortable with the neighborhood (populated by the locals). Then and there, I called up Ravi — the agent representative — and requested for a stay at some hotel. Ravi arranged the hotel for us and we left the houseboat at around 6:30.
Day 6: Flying from Kochi to Delhi
The hotel offered us a comfortable overnight stay and I am glad that I got the transfer at the right time. The overall experience had been very smooth and I left Kochi for Delhi with a smile.
High Point: In the sheer absence of luxury and even on being tossed around throughout the journey – the wildlife safari at the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was thoroughly enjoyable.
Low Point: Not that it was anyone’s fault, but the neighborhood of the houseboat drove me to book a hotel. As a result, we missed out on the night’s stay in the houseboat.
Tip for future travelers: Don’t miss on the Wildlife safari at the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary!
