About Mirissa

Mirissa is particularly known for the fishing industry. For many years now, it has been one of the major ports within Southern Sri Lanka where fishermen can find diverse species such as tuna, mullet, snapper and butterfish among others which are very delicious. However, everything changed around 1980 as many people started visiting Mirissa for holidays. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka was hit by a tsunami caused by an ocean earthquake in 2004. Many buildings including houses, shops, schools and temples were destroyed or damaged in Mirissa. Nevertheless, locals recovered from that incident and made Mirissa one of the most popular tourist spots.

Parrot Rock may surprise you with the array of birds it possesses. Seagulls are white with grey wings, often observed flying around above the beaches. Their graceful movements can be observed as they ride air currents and swoop down to snap something up. Look out for Kingfishers which are birds with large, pointed beaks perched on branches on the water’s edge. They are very good at hunting, and they dive into the water in pursuit of tiny fish. Herons are tall, wading birds with long legs, long necks and sharp beaks that patiently stroll around Parrot Rock’s shallow waters, searching for crabs and small fishes.

5. Surfing: Riding Waves
Mirissa Bay is Sri Lanka’s famous surfing spot. It can be an enjoyable choice, especially if you are a beginner or want to avoid crowded sites. The best time for Surfing is mid-tide because waves tend to break further during high tide, making it difficult to paddle out. Low tide exposes the reef, creating shallow areas that have strong currents, which can prove dangerous for amateurs. If you are a beginner, taking a surf lesson with a certified instructor is highly recommended. Surfboard rentals are available in the rental shops at Mirissa Bay.
