About Haji Lane
Haji Lane in Singapore is located in the Kampong Glam neighborhood. This lane is frequented by young people who come here to visit its independent fashion boutiques and cool Middle Eastern cafes. This place got its name owing to the kind of business that runs here. Haji Lane was populated by many pilgrim-brokers from Arab who used to arrange the haj (a Muslim pilgrimage) for the Muslim population living in Singapore. They also used to arrange the same for people living in nearby islands such as Java island. Interestingly, much before Tiong Bahru, Haji Lane was has established itself as the real indie neighborhood of Singapore.
Here is a timeline showing the emergence and diminishment of Haji Lane in Singapore:
From the 1800s to 1960s – The shophouses at Haji Lane were being majorly used by the pilgrims of Hajj as for lodging purposes, while they were on their journey. And not just this, during their stay at the Haji Lane, they would work as hawkers near the lane so that they could earn and save a sufficient amount of money to finance their further journeys to the pilgrim site.
From the 1960s to 1970s – Haji Lane started providing homes in shophouses for Malay families who were financially very weak.
After the 1970s – During this time, there were a lot of shophouses that were not being occupied by anyone and remained empty for a long time. So the shophouses that were not being used had started to be taken as storage spaces. This lead to the deterioration of the Haji Lane.
But today Haji Lane has again emerged as a bustling and vibrant lane in the city, with colorful walls painted with graffiti and funky cafes. This place still attracts youngsters and is one of the best hangout places for them in Singapore.
