Origin Of Vaikom Temple Kerala

In the ancient texts Bhargava Purana and Sanalkumara Samhita, Vaikom Shree Mahadeva Temple is mentioned as the Vaiyaghra and Vaiyaghra Puram. The place is known as Vyaghrapadapuram because Vaikom Temple History says Vyaghrapada Maharshi had a profound encounter with Lord Shiva here. The name “Vaikom” came from the Tamil word “Vaiyaghra”. One day, an Asur named Khara, received the Shaiva Vidya Upadesha also known as the knowledge of Shaivism from Malyavan and travelled to Chidambaram. There he did severe penances and meditation for Moksh Prapti or Liberation, Shiva was pleased with him and he granted all the boons. Shiva gifted Khara with three great lingams that were drawn out of him, and assured him to be always present in them and hence they should be worshipped to gain salvation, before disappearing. While travelling from the Himalayas in the southern direction, he had one lingam around his neck and one in each hand. On feeling tired, he stopped and rested for a while. However, to resume his journey back, when he tried to lift his hands, the lingams didn’t budge, followed by an heavenly message stating that Shiva will remain there, for granting Moksha (salvation) to whoever takes refuge in him. On attaining salvation, Khara passed on the task of worshipping and protecting the lingams to Sage Vyaghrapada, who had been following him invisibly.
Along with Ettumanoor Siva Temple and Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple, Vaikom Temple Kerala is one of the most cherished Shiva shrines of South India. People believe that these three temples constitute a powerful trinity, so all their wishes can be fulfilled if they worship here before “Ucha Pooja”. But the most actively celebrated festival here is Vaikkath Ashtami.
